I haven't seen anyone post this article from Freakonomics, but it poses an intriguing reason why public libraries as we know them would not exist today. Don't stop with the article itself, the comments are just as interesting.

And then I ran across a post on another post from Collecting My Thoughts about Progressive librarians as they style themselves. Well worth taking time to read.

With all the chatter about that other article about librarians, I hope these two don't go unnoticed.
