International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day, observed September 8 , focuses attention on worldwide literacy issues and needs. It is estimated that 860 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) and that more than 100 million children lack access to education.[Reading.org]

And as a side to this, here is an article about the decline of biblical literacy and a reason it is related to the international holiday:

" Biblical illiteracy may also be part of a general malaise in education.
"It's a dumbed-down society," Eikenberry said. "Literacy in general has
suffered."
