Tis the season for politics here--in case you haven't noticed! The February 2004 issue of American Demographics has a great article on the role religion plays in voting: "Whose Side is God on?' by Louise Witt. The statistics and findings aren't really surprising, but seeing them all in one place pulls together some disparate information and reports, I've been seeing and hearing in the last few months.
Here is a quote: "Clashing views on religion's place in politics are most pronounced among different age segments, ethnic groups, political affiliations and religious organizations. It follows logic that almost 1 in 4 (23 percent) of those who say that religion is "not important" in their everyday lives also characterizes their own ideology as 'progressive/veryliberal.' " The paragraph goes on to identify other groups who say religion is unimportant. (p. 19)
BTW, I found this article as a result of researching a faculty query about obtaining full text from the American Demographics website. (Alas, only individual subscribers at this point)
